Co-inventor of Alta Vista dies aged 42

Paul Andrew Flaherty, a co-inventor of the Alta Vista search engine, died unexpectedly, aged 42 on March 16, after collapsing at his Belmont home.

Alta Vista, one of the early programs that allowed users to search the Internet, was created in 1995 while Mr. Flaherty was working for Digital Equipment Corp.(DEC) in order to demonstrate the power of DEC business computers. In the late 1990s, Alta Vista was among the top search engines on the World Wide Web, although it was eventually overtaken by Yahoo and Google.
