Compare and Contrast: Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and Search Engine
Optimisation (SEO).
In this article Kevin Lee emphasises that both SEO and SEM are not as
simple as sometimes assumed in the media and differ from traditional marketing
and basic web design respectively.
The essence of SEO is in removing obstacles to a search engine both finding
and understanding the essence of a site.
The skills of SEM in maintaining excellence in paid search are quite
different, and require a combination of immediate and reactive action
in an evolving situation.
However there are common features in the two processes which are listed
in the article, and which are related to improved user experience through
understanding visitor needs as represented by search queries.
