Absolute Versus Relative Linking
When you use an absolute link to another page on your web site you specify the complete URL in the link, like (http://www.yourdomain.com/page1.html).
A relative link occurs when you have an internal link and you only specify the page URL and not the full URL in the link (for example, a relative link would be when you link only to page1.htm).
Always use absolute links whenever you can. If you use relative links, it is possible that you may lose all of your rankings suddenly in the search engines due to the fact that a relative link may allow the search engine to index an unwanted site rather than the one intended. With an absolute link you make sure the search engines know which "version" of your site to index.
An exception to this rule can occur in certain web development environments where relative links are required because of the way web designers work on the website.
